Background of the Study

Effective inventory management is critical to the smooth operation of educational institutions. Schools require efficient tracking and management of resources such as textbooks, laboratory equipment, furniture, and digital devices to ensure optimal utilization and prevent losses due to theft, misplacement, or mismanagement (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). Traditional inventory management methods in secondary schools often rely on manual record-keeping, which is prone to errors, delays, and inefficiencies (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2023). These challenges hinder proper resource allocation, resulting in shortages, overstocking, and difficulties in tracking school assets.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has emerged as an effective solution for improving inventory management across various industries, including education. RFID systems use electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track inventory items, offering real-time visibility, accuracy, and efficiency in resource management (Olawale & Musa, 2024). Unlike barcode systems, RFID does not require direct scanning, allowing multiple assets to be tracked simultaneously and reducing administrative workload (Adebayo & Ibrahim, 2023). By integrating RFID into school inventory management, institutions can enhance resource monitoring, reduce losses, and streamline procurement processes.

Despite the potential benefits of RFID technology, many secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area still rely on traditional inventory management methods. Challenges such as lack of awareness, limited funding, and resistance to technological change hinder the adoption of RFID systems (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2024). Schools continue to experience inefficiencies in asset tracking, leading to frequent cases of missing or underutilized resources. Addressing these issues requires the implementation of RFID-based inventory systems that can enhance efficiency, accountability, and overall school management.

This study aims to investigate the impact of RFID technology on school inventory management, assess existing challenges, and propose strategies for its successful implementation in secondary schools in Dutse.

Statement of the Problem

Secondary schools in Dutse face significant challenges in managing their inventory due to reliance on manual tracking methods. These conventional systems are time-consuming, prone to human errors, and ineffective in preventing inventory loss and misplacement (Olawale & Musa, 2023). School administrators often struggle with delayed stock updates, inaccurate records, and difficulties in tracking asset movements, leading to inefficient resource allocation (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024).

While RFID technology offers a promising solution for enhancing inventory management efficiency, its adoption in secondary schools remains low. Many institutions lack the necessary technological infrastructure, trained personnel, and financial resources to implement RFID-based inventory systems (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2024). Additionally, there is limited research on the effectiveness of RFID technology in school inventory management, making it difficult for stakeholders to make informed decisions about its implementation.

This study seeks to explore how RFID technology can improve school inventory management, address current inefficiencies, and enhance resource utilization. By providing empirical evidence and practical recommendations, the research aims to support the adoption of RFID systems in secondary schools in Dutse.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current challenges associated with inventory management in secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of RFID technology in improving school inventory tracking and resource management.

  3. To propose an RFID-based inventory management framework for secondary schools in Dutse.

Research Questions

  1. What are the major challenges affecting school inventory management in secondary schools in Dutse?

  2. How does RFID technology enhance the efficiency and accuracy of school inventory management?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to facilitate the adoption of RFID-based inventory management systems in secondary schools?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Manual inventory management methods in secondary schools in Dutse are inefficient and prone to errors.

  2. Implementing RFID technology significantly improves the accuracy and efficiency of school inventory management.

  3. Schools that adopt RFID-based inventory management systems experience reduced losses and improved resource allocation.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the role of RFID technology in enhancing school inventory management efficiency. By examining the challenges of traditional inventory methods and evaluating the benefits of RFID, the research provides valuable insights for school administrators, policymakers, and technology developers. The findings will aid in the development of cost-effective and scalable RFID solutions tailored to the needs of secondary schools. Additionally, this study will contribute to existing literature on RFID applications in education, serving as a reference for future research on technology-driven school management improvements.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State. It focuses on evaluating current inventory management challenges, assessing the effectiveness of RFID technology, and proposing implementation strategies. The study does not cover other local government areas, primary schools, or tertiary institutions.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): A wireless technology that uses electromagnetic fields to identify and track tagged objects for efficient inventory management.

  2. Inventory Management: The process of tracking, recording, and controlling school assets, including books, furniture, and equipment, to ensure proper utilization.

  3. School Resources: Physical assets such as teaching materials, laboratory equipment, and technological devices used in secondary schools for academic and administrative purposes.
